The Beginning

How Miss Algérie
Was Founded

The earliest edition of the competition was staged in 1985, held as part of an international friendship forum — the first time a national selection of this kind brought Algerian representation to an international audience.

It became a formal institution just over a decade later. On 24 November 1996, Miss Algérie was officially created and registered with the ONDA, Algeria's national copyright office — establishing it as the country's officially recognised national competition. It was founded and organised by Abdelkader Hamdad Cherradi, and the organising committee has been based in Algiers ever since.

The purpose was, and remains, twofold: to give young women from every wilaya of Algeria a national platform of their own, and to ensure Algeria is represented with dignity at the world's major international competitions.
